AR.EMBnet Live CD
LiveCDHome >> Information

"AR.EMBnet Live CD" is a customized distribution of "Knoppix"(a live-cd version of Debian GNU/linux.). It was designed specifically for the needs of the molecular biology user community. It offers the whole functionality of a bioinformatic server.

As it is Knoppix-based , this live CD provides an excellent hardware detection (through Kudzu ,the Red Hat Linux hardware probing library) and does not install anything in your computer's hard disk. Dued to its compressed filesystem, this live CD can hold up to two gigabytes of software and databases. During Knoppix remasterization, many applications that are not useful for the biologist were removed.

"AR.EMBnet Live CD" provides a graphic interface through the "X Window System" ; "iceWM" (a lightweight window manger for Linux) was chosen to control the appearance of windows because of its reasonable performance even in slow machines.

Bioinformatics Tools added to AR.EMBnet Live CD :

  • EMBOSS : Free Open Source software analysis package. It includes a range of tools for sequence analysis

  • wrappers4EMBOSS : These wrappers are an EMBOSS interface to many widely used sequence analysis software (CLUSTAL, BLAST, fastA, ps_scan, pf_make, bscan)

  • wEMBOSS: Web environment from which the user can access EMBOSS. It also supplies users with space and tools to organize and review their work. (As this "Live CD" uses RAM memory for user space, you should save you r work in non-volatile memory before shutting down your computer)

Accessible Databases :

    Local Databases
  • nucDB : EMBL Subset
  • protDB: Uniprot Subset
  • dinoDB: Dinosaur Sequences
Remote Databases (at European Bioinformatics Institute)
  • embl : EMBL nucleotide sequence database available at EBI
  • emblsva : EMBL sequence version archive.(Respository of all entries which have ever appeared in EMBL)
  • emblcds : Nucleotide sequences of the CDS (coding sequence) features, as annotated in EMBL database plus accompanying annotation
  • emblcon : The CON database division of EMBL (represents complete genomes and other long sequences constructed from segmente entries)
  • uniprot : Universal Protein Resource available at EBI
